Sylvia: Eatonton’s Beloved Ghost

It’s no surprise that the historic counties nestled in Lake Sinclair have somewhat of a haunting background. However, Eatonton has one ghost in particular that every local knows about: Sylvia. This eerie yet friendly presence has been talked about for a long time in Putnam County and remains a story that citizens love to tell. Keep reading to learn more about this supernatural character.

Who is Sylvia, and How Did She Pass?

Many think that ghosts are only out to hurt the living, as they may have died due to a violent nature. However, this was not the case for Sylvia. Sylvia was once a soon-to-be blushing bride sometime around the Civil War era. She was about to start a life with her one true love, or that’s what everyone thought. Sylvia was not in love with the man she was about to wed, which, of course, led her to deep despair. As her wedding was about to begin, the Southern bride made a hasty decision: she was going to attempt an escape by climbing out of the window. No one knows where she was fleeing to, but Sylvia probably had no idea, either. She knew she had to run no matter what.

With no time to waste, though, Sylvia bolted to the window, but as she did, she tumbled into the large trunk near the window and fell unconscious. Her family came searching and presumed that she had successfully escaped out of the window. The room was boarded up, and the body was never found. Others say that Sylvia flat-out threw herself off the second story after learning of her fiancé’s death. Either way, Sylvia was now a devastated bride for eternity.

Where does she haunt?

Sylvia’s spirit haunts the rooms of Panola Hall, the home she once inhabited. Panola Hall was built in 1854, making it one of the oldest homes in Eatonton. Sylvia’s Coffee is also named after the ghost, as the owners now preside in Panola Hall. So perhaps her presence can be felt at the very place she shares a name with. I’m sure Sylvia needs a strong espresso after all her years of haunting.

Have People Encountered Sylvia?

Locals say that Sylvia can be seen in the second-story window of Panola Hill, gazing longingly into the distance. Those who are lucky enough to be deemed worthy of her presence have seen Sylvia donning her hooped, white wedding dress and smelling of roses. The owners of Panola Hall and Sylvia’s Coffee haven't met Sylvia yet, but they recall a welcoming presence and the faint smell of roses when they enter their home. Who knows? Maybe Sylvia is just a little bit reserved. A graceful ghost, if I’ve ever heard one!
