This free lecture series brings the past to life through engaging presentations on local history. Each program features a different speaker who shares unique stories, research, and expertise on a variety of historical topics.

On October 20, attendees will enjoy "Red, White, and Cue: Georgia History Through Barbeque," presented by Georgia College & State University history professor Dr. Trea Welborn. Dr. Welborn specializes in American cultural history, focusing on the emotional dimensions of evolving ideas of virtue, vice, and the role of violence in shaping cultural values during the American Civil War era.

His research also explores the history of Southern foodways, beginning with the contentious role of alcohol in the region’s cultural values and social conventions. That work expanded into a broader examination of how food traditions—especially barbecue—have played a significant role in shaping both individual and collective identities throughout Georgia and the South.
