6-WEEK NARRATIVE NON-FICTION WORKSHOP
We all know how to tell a story, yet when it comes to writing one, we often become our own worst enemy. We tell readers what to think and feel. We throw in extraneous details because we have them. We telegraph the ending. Memorable stories do not happen in the inverted pyramid of journalism school; they unfold more like the ghost tales we told as kids. In this six-week course, we’ll learn how to recapture that natural sense of storytelling. We’ll study examples, do some writing, critique each other’s work. In fact, much of the class will be a roundtable workshop as opposed to a lecture.
Each week we’ll focus on a different aspect of nonfiction writing: creating memorable characters, staging conflict and complication, setting scene and atmosphere, finding your voice and style, distilling theme and meaning. We’ll also explore one of the hottest topics in our craft: the line between fact and fiction. And we’ll talk about any other writing issues you want to hash out.
This course should be useful for anyone looking to write a book, a memoir, essays, magazine articles, journalism small or large, or better blog posts. All levels of writers are welcome.
Music Bingo at Pickle Barrel
Music Bingo combines two favorite pastimes together into one, high energy and is quite frankly ADDICTIVE. Take the edge-of-your-seat element of Bingo and add to that a “name that tune” and you are half way to understanding what Music Bingo is all about. Pickle Barrel has brought together two elements people know, love and have been playing for years to produce a program that is fresh, exciting and creative.
And above all else, EVERYONE will be talking about it!
Mining Your Life Story
When it comes to writing a book about your personal life or family, learn how to use journalistic-type storytelling skills to create a work of fiction or nonfiction. Led by a seasoned journalist with nearly four decades of newswriting experience, you can pick up tips to hone interviewing, investigative, research, and reporting talents to explore your personal or family history in greater depth than a shorter article, essay, press release, video, social media post, or business report. See how the two mediums of expression (news and book writing) compare and how you can navigate the crossover in your own material. Some of the subjects discussed in this session include how to know when a life experience, news story, or idea is worthy of playing out in a book, what research tools are available to add depth and credibility, and how to turn facts into non-fiction or fiction to recreate history with or without interviews.

Meet Lynn
History has never meant a dull recounting of dates and wars for Lynn Cullen. She was trained to love the subject as a child, when her father led his large family on camping trips across the United States every summer, excursions that centered around learning about the lives of the women and men who shaped the world. By visiting their childhood homes or the places where they struggled to make their mark, Cullen was taught at an early age to seek the real people behind their legend.
As an adult, her way of trying to understand the people who intrigue her is to write a novel about them. She continues the practice, taught to her by her father, of visiting the places where her subjects lived, loved, and worked, to better know them. She makes a point of going to most of the scenes in her books, be it Amsterdam (I Am Rembrandt’s Daughter), Spain (The Creation of Eve), Belgium (Reign of Madness), New York (Mrs. Poe), Tuscany (Twain’s End), Minnesota (The Sisters of Summit Avenue), Denmark (The Woman with the Cure), or Manhattan (When We were Brilliant). She has built a life around learning about people from other times and places, taking her own family on her missions.
All of her novels start with a question. In the case of When We Were Brilliant, it was who was the woman behind the most famous face in the world? Cullen had longed to understand Marilyn Monroe since she was eight years old, when she saw her in The Seven Year Itch. Even at that young age, she felt a tenderness toward the enigmatic woman who so lightly flitted away from those who would entrap her. Decades later, she was surprised to see a unique side of Marilyn in the photographs by documentarian Eve Arnold, the only woman photographer for whom Marilyn chose to sit, and the seed for When We Were Brilliant took root.
Cullen’s nationally and internationally bestselling novels have been translated into 17 languages and are the recipients of various honors, including the NPR Great Read, ALA Best Book of the Year, Oprah Book of the Week, People Magazine Book of the Week, and Indie Next Selection. She lives in Atlanta when not traveling to seek the unseen within the legends we thought we knew.

Meet Robert
In his words…
A graduate of Florida State University, I presently reside in Atlanta Georgia with my partner. By day, I serve as Vice President of Easter Seals North Georgia, Inc., a non-profit organization strengthening children and their families at the most critical times in their development. Through my non-profit work, I am a champion for early childhood literacy. In all the hours between, I write.
Raised alongside three feral, younger brothers in the rash-inducing, subtropical climate of Cairo Georgia, I am a lifelong resident of the South. A circumstance, no doubt, leaving an indelible mark upon my voice as a writer.
Aside from sense of place, my writing is influenced and inspired by the literary work of others. As a boy, it was with great obsession, I turned the well-worn pages of Charlotte Brontë’s, Jane Eyre. Wuthering Heights? Yes, another source of adoration. And Truman Capote’s debut novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms, I admire with equal reverence along with everything ever written by Tennessee Williams.
Charles Dickens’ Miss Havisham is one of my all-time favorite characters. Many hours I spent playing her, wrapped in an old lace tablecloth borrowed from my mother’s linen closet—my tattered, makeshift wedding dress. Locked away in my boyhood room, I haunted the place, plotting revenge, shooing rats from the wedding cake. “Break their hearts my pride and hope, break their hearts and have no mercy,” I would whisper into the impressionable ear of my lovely Estella. Break their hearts.
As an adult, my literary palate is diverse, reading everyone from the sublime Michael Cunningham to the gifted Jesmyn Ward to the incomparable Ron Rash. Though my tastes have evolved through the years, one constant remains: the impact of literature and art and music upon my writing. And my unrelenting quest to make and find beauty in this world.

The Swingin' Medallions
Tradition is defined as “The handing down of a belief, legend, or custom from generation to generation”. The Swingin’ Medallions, a Southern tradition since 1962, are a living definition of the word.
How does a band endure the generations? The group’s signature high-energy style delights audiences of all ages. Their act, as well as their music, is indeed timeless. The band was founded in 1962 by John McElrath and now includes his sons, Shawn and Shane; plus, Joe Morris, the original drummer, who makes as many shows as he can!
Featuring an ever-popular horn section, the group effectively blends the sounds and music of yesterday and today. The band has performed throughout the nation in thousands of venues. Their diverse repertoire has made them overwhelming favorites with college audiences as well as the more mature rock and rollers.
The band was made famous by its 1.5 million selling hit album, “Double Shot of My Baby’s Love”, in 1966. It remains the signature song of the band. The song, in fact, continues to demonstrate its timeless quality on radio, television and in motion pictures. “Double Shot” was followed with another hit, “She Drives Me Out of My Mind”, in 1967. In 1969, they released yet another hit, “Hey, Hey Baby”, the song featured at their 2004 Gator Bowl Half-Time Show performance. The band released countless other singles through Capitol and Smash Records.

Mandy Barnett - Winter Wonderland
Grand Ole Opry member Mandy Barnett, one of Nashville’s enduring musical treasures who has showcased her mesmerizing voice on stages across the globe, started singing at five years-old. She has been singing since.
Barnett’s style is rooted in the classic country and pop crooning of iconic singers and timeless sounds. As one record executive put it, “Mandy Barnett is a song’s best friend.”
Barnett first gained national prominence as the original star of one of the first “jukebox” musicals, Always...Patsy Cline at Nashville's famed Ryman Auditorium.
